Gestalt Therapy - A podcast about living here and now
Episode 10 - When our Body hurts after being stressed.
Stress can manifest itself in all different ways, even in our bodies. Tension in the neck, shoulders or back is one of the common problems you can experience when you are stressed. But sometimes it is not so evident that the pain you feel in your body is related to stress.
The figure of today;
Pain in your body due to stress occurs frequently. We tend to acknowledge the pain, and we might feel weak because of it but it is often not immediately clear that the pain is related to stress. We can be stressed for many reasons. Work, family, a new chapter in our lives. We would really need to be aware of the stress in our lives to recognise it and connect it to the physical pain we feel.
How is this important?;
I give you an example of a patient in the praxis named Alma who came to me with back pains which were immediately apparent when she walked up the stairs to the therapy room. In Gestalt, we ask a lot of how questions so we gave her back pain some attention by asking how it was and Alma imagined putting the pain in the empty chair, and look at it and talk to it. This exercise is intended to make you think about your life, to see if changes are needed. In Alma’s case, she realised that her life was overfull and that if she kept adding more stuff the pain would get worse.
What’s Gestalt in all of this?;
By concentrating on the pain during the session you can use your inner zone. When speaking directly to the pain. To deal with the information you get you need to use your clever head which is another of the 3 awareness zones mentioned in Episodes 3 and 8. By asking the pain what it needed and wanted will bring awareness in figuring out where it came from.
